Chris Hemsworth reveals ‘shocking’ Alzheimer’s warning
Chris Hemsworth has opened up about his fitness and lifestyle changes he’s made in the wake of a “shocking” health warning. The Australian actor, 39, discovered during the filming of National Geographic series Limitless that his DNA contains two copies of the gene APOE4, which has been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Speaking about the news, the actor, who plays Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), told Vanity Fair: “They took all my bloodwork and did a bunch of tests and the plan was to on-camera tell me all the results and then talk about how you can improve this and that. “And Peter Attia, who is the longevity doctor in that episode, and overseeing a lot of the show, called [show creator] Darren [Aronofsky] and said, ‘I don’t want to tell him this on camera. We need to have an off-side conversation and see if he even wants this to be in the show.’ “It was pretty shocking because he called me up and he told me.” Hemsworth explained that he had certainly not expected to receive such “intense” news as the show was originally intended to be a “fun” way of exploring “longevity”. However, he said: “It was a really good catalyst to dive into everything I needed to be doing in either the prevention front or the management front. “There was an intensity to navigating it. Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death in the hope that we’ll somehow avoid it.” Speaking on camera about the discovery, Hemsworth said: “You’re constantly thinking you’re going to live forever, especially as a young individual. Then to be told that this might be the thing that might take you out was like, whoa... it kinda floored me.” Since then, Hemsworth has upheaved his life, and revealed the changes he’s introduced after sdis overing the news. Speaking to Men’s Health, Hemsworth, who is known for his muscly physique, said he is “incorporating more solitude into his life” and has lowered the amount he exercises. “I’ve always been pretty consistent with my exercise commitments, but lately I’ve really felt the importance of taking time for yourself without any outside voice or stimulation and making time for stillness,” he told the outlet. The actor, who is sleeping more regularly as well as having ice baths, also addressed the way his physique changes for roles, stating: “My weight fluctuates a lot due to differing roles and also my own interests in regards to challenging my body in different ways.” He continued: “‘I’m lifting less frequently than I was and I’m incorporating more cardio and endurance workouts which I much prefer than heavy body building style sessions.’ Read More The form of exercise that can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, according to new study Chris Hemsworth criticises Taika Waititi’s Thor film for being ‘too silly’ This is the lesser-known symptom of Alzheimer’s that could affect drivers Brits reveal advice they would give their younger selves What ‘healthy obesity’ really means according to the experts How to get rid of bedbugs: Signs and symptoms amid threat of UK invasion

Brits reveal advice they would give their younger selves - including investing in property
Brits reveal advice they would give their younger selves - including investing in property
Brits have revealed the advice they would give their younger selves – including investing in property as early as possible, taking more photos and not being afraid of rejection when asking someone out. A survey of 2,000 adults found 58 per cent would love nothing more than to give the younger version of themselves some good tips. Those surveyed said they would look after their physical health more, avoid wasting their time on negative people and learn from their mistakes. The top 20 list also included recommendations to save 10 per cent of your wages every month, spend more time with your parents and celebrate the little wins. But while 67 per cent would offer financial words of wisdom, 82 per cent felt positive knowing every decision they’ve made has led them to the point where they are now. And the same percentage (82 per cent) wanted to live their life with no regrets. AXA UK commissioned the study as part of its ‘Future You will thank you’ campaign which looks at how our future selves will thank us for the good choices we make today and reveals the decisions people are most thankful for. Scarlette Douglas, former A Place in The Sun host and I’m A Celebrity contestant, is taking part in the campaign discussing the forks in the road which led her to a career in television. She has contributed to an eBook revealing more of these insights from celebrities and the public. Scarlette said: “I had been performing in musicals for eight years when I made what I feel was a great decision at that point in my life, which was to move away from theatre and pursue a different career in television presenting. “I finished my last musical in 2014 and in 2015 I landed an amazing job as a presenter for A Place in The Sun – I had my first presenting role on a Channel 4 show. “I’ve now been in television for eight years and if I didn’t take a leap of faith and make that decision to leave musical theatre and pursue television, I would never be where I am now.” The study also found buying a house as soon as possible, getting married and heading off abroad were some of the things people are most grateful to their young self for. But when it came to regrets, 39 per cent had at least one big one in their life. Of those, 56 per cent said these were romantically linked, while 35 per cent had health-related regrets. Others spoke about how they wish they got to know parents and loved ones better before they passed away. Although 27 per cent had learnt from some of the regrets their parents had experienced. Architect and TV presenter George Clarke is also involved with the campaign and spoke about his first home. He said: “When I bought my first ‘grown-up’ house it was a wreck and definitely a building project. “We had to live in it while we did the work bit by bit over the course of three years – it was a major project and at the time we didn’t have a lot of money, so it was work, earn, do building work... repeat. “It was a major refurbishment and what made it even harder was our child was born during the build too. All of it was a big risk, especially a financial one. “The house looked amazing when we completed it, and although we loved it the financial pressure and the length of the build took its toll and we made the decision to sell. “We were very lucky with the sale and we were able to buy another house just a few hundred yards from the one we’d sold – that project began the journey of setting ourselves up for life.” The research also revealed that dropping a phone down the toilet, having to pay hefty vet bills and having their home flooded were the situations where people regretted not getting insurance. There was a desire among those surveyed, by OnePoll, to say yes more often, with people wanting to experience new travel and holiday destinations (46 per cent), new social activities and plans (35 per cent) and new friendships (34 per cent). Jason Fox, TV broadcaster, former UK Special Forces soldier and Royal Marines Commando, is also taking part in the initiative. He said: “When I left the marines after 20 years of service, I suffered from PTSD and had to learn to look after my mental health. “I realised I could also be useful in the civil world, by showing others that mental wellbeing is a strength, not a weakness. “When I was able to, the best decision I made was to invest in my mental health initiative and organisation ‘Rock 2 Recovery’ to support others in similar situations.” Tara Foley, AXA UK’s CEO, said: “Every decision we make impacts our future, from the biggest life choices to the smallest. “The findings show most people are pretty happy with the majority of decisions they’ve made, but they wouldn’t be averse to going back and giving their younger self a bit of guidance to influence how things turned out further down the line. “It’s encouraging that so many people say they aren’t living their life with regrets and it’s good to see a real desire to experience new things and push the boundaries, such as visiting far-flung places or trying new activities. “Making sure you’re always covered for every eventuality – whether it’s car, home, business or health insurance – means you can take on whatever life throws at you without worrying about unforeseen consequences or unexpected financial challenges.” Top 10 pieces of advice many people wish they could tell their younger self: 1) Be more confident 2) Try not to care what other people think 3) Don’t let opportunities pass you by 4) Look after your physical health more 5) Don’t waste time with negative people 6) Learn from your mistakes 7) Save 10 per cent of your wages every month 8) Eat healthily as it will pay dividends down the line 9) Go on all the holidays you can 10) Invest in property as early as you can 11) Don’t just settle for things 12) Just relax and enjoy the ride 13) Look after your mental health better 14) Spend more time with your parents 15) Celebrate the little wins 16) Take more risks 17) Don’t be afraid of rejection when asking someone out 18) Always be there for your mates 19) Take more photos 20) Be disciplined with your time Read More Brits are so fed up with emails that retail giants now send reminder letters Adults are eager to explore the world alone over the next three years, study finds Study finds more people are moving into high flood zones, increasing risk of water disasters Chris Hemsworth shares big life changes after ‘shocking’ health warning How to get rid of bedbugs: Signs and symptoms amid threat of UK invasion I have felt the shame of infertility – it’s why I started a club for women like me

Sarah Jessica Parker channels Carrie Bradshaw on the red carpet in mismatched shoes
Sarah Jessica Parker seemed to pay homage to her character Carrie Bradshaw as she took to the red carpet in New York. The And Just Like That and Sex And The City star paired her black tutu-inspired dress with mismatching shoes at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala. Parker, 58, tapped into the trend for ‘balletcore’ with a black bow in her hair and a full skirt in the Carolina Herrera dress – perhaps a nod to the white tulle mini skirt she wore in the opening sequence of Sex And The City. Dance has been a big theme on the runways of fashion month in September – Victoria Beckham’s spring/summer 2024 Paris Fashion Week show was inspired by her childhood love of ballet, with the collection full of diaphanous tulle gowns. But the most notable part of Parker’s outfit was undoubtedly her footwear. With one pearlescent pink high heel and the other black – both from the star’s own brand, SJP Collection, and with statement buckles – the shoes seem to hark back to her character Carrie in an episode of Sex And The City. In a 2000 episode of the show called Escape From New York, Carrie and her friends head to Los Angeles – and she dons a white dress with floral detailing, worn with one blue and one pink Christian Louboutin strappy sandals. In an Instagram comment in 2019, Parker explained the sartorial decision: “We had 2 pairs of what I believe are @louboutinworld scrappy [sic] sandals. Pat [costume designer Patricia Field] and I chose to do 1 of each. Perhaps because both were so delicious in color and seemed in harmony with the dress but also because we simply loved doing 1 of each.” Mismatched shoes are becoming something of a signature for Parker – she wore one bright pink and one yellow high heel to attend the same gala event in 2019. Parker – who sits on the board of directors of the New York City Ballet – was joined on the red carpet by her husband, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off actor Matthew Broderick. Celebrities including talk show host Andy Cohen and actresses Laverne Cox and Claire Danes also attended the event. Read More Does your pillowcase make a difference to your skin and hair health? Does your pillowcase make a difference to your skin and hair health?
Does your pillowcase make a difference to your skin and hair health?
There’s a reason we call it beauty sleep: a good night’s kip can erase dark circles and transform a tired complexion, leaving you looking and feeling as fresh as a daisy. It’s not always possible to get the recommended seven to nine hours of shut-eye a night, however, so could your choice of bedding enhance your skin – and prevent bedhead hair – while you snooze? Some beauty buffs won’t sleep on anything but silk, and now there are even copper and skincare-infused pillowcases promising to smooth your strands and decrease the signs of ageing. But do these fabrics really make a difference, or will catching enough Zs keep your hair and skin at their healthiest? What happens to skin while we sleep? “While we sleep, skin cells regenerate, and the production of collagen and elastin, two essential proteins for skin elasticity and youthfulness, increases,” says Dr Radmila Lukian, dermatologist at Lucia Clinic. “Moreover, the skin’s protective barrier strengthens, helping it retain moisture and shield against environmental stressors.” That’s why you can end up with a dull, lacklustre complexion if you’ve not been getting enough rest. “Increased blood flow to the skin during sleep delivers the necessary oxygen and nutrients for cell renewal,” says Dr. Johannes Uys, GP at Broadgate General Practice. “Adequate sleep will contribute towards a healthier complexion as a result, while poor sleep can lead to skin issues such as dryness and premature ageing.” How important is sleep for hair health? “Deep sleep is vital for hair as this is when the body repairs and regenerates hair cells,” says Mark Blake, globally recognised trichologist and Nioxin ambassador. If you’re suffering with stress, sleep gives your body a break and a chance to recover. “Stress can cause hair loss conditions such as telogen effluvium,” says Blake, meaning temporary shedding of hair. “Sleep is the time your body does a form of damage control, sending anti-inflammatory agents to areas of damage: repairing, replacing, and removing damaged cells in the body. ” Can your pillowcase fabric have a detrimental impact? “The fabric of your pillowcase can have a notable effect on your skin,” says Lukian. “Coarse or abrasive fabrics can lead to friction, potentially causing skin irritation and even tiny tears.” This can be particularly problematic for individuals with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Cotton could, Uys says: “Lead to frizz or hair tangles because of increased friction, and may also potentially dry out the skin because of its greater propensity to absorb moisture.” While there’s no evidence that friction during the night can cause hair loss, if you don’t wash your pillowcase frequently enough (ideally once a week), it could affect the condition of your hair. Blake says: “Bacteria, sebum and general dirt can be transferred from your pillowcase back on to clean hair leaving it dull, lank, and lifeless when you wake up.” What’s the best type of pillowcase for skin and hair? If you want the smoothest and least absorbent pillowcase, experts say silk is usually the best – but also the most expensive – option, unless you’re vegan, as it’s derived from insects. “Silk pillowcases reduce friction, which can help prevent wrinkles,” says Lukian. “Silk is also less likely to absorb moisture from your skin, aiding in maintaining skin hydration.” Satin, which is a silk-like textile woven from a variety of materials, is a cheaper alternative, she says: “Satin pillowcases have a smooth surface that reduces friction and can be a suitable choice for those concerned about skin health.” If you prefer a crisp cotton pillowcase, Lukian recommends: “Look for ones with a high thread count, as they tend to be smoother and gentler on the skin. Cotton is breathable and can help prevent overheating during sleep.” Blake agrees that silk is the top choice when it comes to looking after your hair. “The tight weave gives a smooth, slippery surface helping prevent bed head allowing you to wake up with the same hairstyle you went to bed with,” he says. “Silk pillowcases cannot hold bacteria, fungus or mould and so are not a breeding ground or health hazard.” Could the new generation of high-tech pillowcases supercharge your sleep? “These products often incorporate materials like copper-infused fabric, with the promise of promoting collagen production and reducing wrinkles,” Lukian explains. “Skincare-infused and ‘anti-ageing’ pillowcases may offer some benefits, but should not replace a holistic skincare routine and healthy lifestyle choices when aiming to maintain youthful and healthy skin.” Drowsy Damask Rose Standard Sized Silk Pillowcase, £67 (was £89)Damask Rose Silk Pillowcase John Lewis Organic Mulberry Silk Standard Pillowcase Natural Cream, £45 Dunelm Dorma Silver Silk Pillowcases, £30 each Jessica Russell Flint Silk Pillowcase De Fleurs, £65, Not On The High Street Bed Lab Skincare Infused Pillow Graphite Grey, £49 Read More As transphobic hate crimes rise by 11% in a year, how to be a better ally Impact of relationships with AI chatbot programmes ‘worrying’, psychologist says Pokemon’s Detective Pikachu Returns and more top games of the week How to talk to kids about cigarettes and vapes, following Rishi Sunak’s smoke-free generation plans 4 must-have denim trends for autumn, from wide-leg jeans to split skirts Doorscaping: How to create a fabulous front door display for autumn

Geri Halliwell explains why she replaced her iconic Spice Girl style
Geri Halliwell explains why she replaced her iconic Spice Girl style
It’s no secret that Spice Girls star Geri Halliwell retired her famed flag dress and ditched her platform booties for preppy pieces and flat shoes, and now she has explained why. According to the 51-year-old, as her “Ginger Spice” era ended, so did her desire to don daring clothing like shimmery pencil skirts and ultra-cropped tops. Halliwell said that, as she’s gotten older, she’s started to feel a desire to streamline her wardrobe. During a conversation with Jenna Bush Hager for the 4 October episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna, Halliwell said: “I don’t know about you, but as you get older, you want to keep it simple. And one thing I’ll say is everything matches. It’s just fast, fast.” From halters to high-neck solid shirts, the “Wannabe” singer explained her style change to be inspired by men surprisingly. “You look at the men who are always wearing these same things, a uniform,” Halliwell remarked. “Can’t I do the same? Why not?” Now, the music icon – known for her eccentric on-stage energy and fiery red hair with bleached streaks – has assumed a neutral palette, sticking to mostly monochromatic looks. When asked about her iconic Union Jack mini, Halliwell admitted the design was motivated by a common kitchen essential. “I made that dress out of a tea towel,” she confessed. While the vibrant performer may not wear jewelled one-pieces, she’s adopted versions of her former favourite. Most recently, Halliwell lengthened the Union Jack gown, before reimagining the entire design to be a ball gown with a straight neckline. Speaking to Vogue in 2020, the author opened up about how altering her old emblem only made the garment more special. “I felt a sense of power in developing the dress into something different, something even more timeless,” she noted. “For me, it shows the revolution of being a woman.” “The way I dress has always reflected how I feel about myself at that time,” she continued. Halliwell tied the knot with Christian Horner in May of 2015. The two were first aquainted during her Ginger Spice days when the group of girls were invited to the 2009 Monaco Grand Prix with Bernie Ecclestone. However, Halliwell and Horner ignited their whirlwind romance in 2014, developing their connection for one year before saying “I do.” Before getting hitched, Halliwell welcomed her daughter Bluebell, 11, with her previous partner. In 2017, she gave birth to her second child, Montague.
