YouTuber Accuses Casetify Of Copyright Theft, And He Can Prove It

One YouTuber is taking on the phone case company Casetify, alleging the company copied some of his case designs — and he can prove it.

YouTuber Zack Nelson, the man behind the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything has been working with the company brand to release a series of phone and tablet cases that look like what the device looks like inside. Called Teardown, the cases kind of make it look like your device doesn’t have a back at all rather than a case.

Recently Hong Kong-based Casetify started selling a similar case, and after a bit of investigation, Nelson realized that Casetify’s case was literally copying his design, Kotaku reports.

When Nelson created the Teardown line of cases he scanned each piece of hardware at 2400 dpi, he also added some inside jokes and easter eggs to the design. For instance, since the brand was launched on 11.11.11 he included the number 11 around the word “SUB-SCRIBE” on the image of a ribbon on the case.

Beyond that, the iPhone cases also have “RO807” printed on one of the metal strips, a shortcut to one of dbrand’s most popular cases to date, a robot and the Samsung S23 Ultra case has a note that says “Glass is glass and glass breaks,” a common catchphrase from Nelson’s YouTube channel.

Nelson details all the similarities in a post on his YouTube page:

He says that while Casetify did try to remove some of the more obvious easter eggs on the device, it managed to leave a number of them in what appear to be scans of the brand’s work rather than new images created by Casetify. Some of the cases even have the brand’s logo on them.

Casetify commented on the suit Friday on X with the following, carefully worded statement.

Nelson plans to keep people updated on the case via his YouTube channel.
