Western Digital Will Release Fix For Faulty SanDisk SSDs

Western Digital will release a firmware update to fix an issue with its SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro SSDs that have left some SanDisks unreadable, Engadget reports.

The issue, which primarily affects 4TB but also 2TB Extreme V2 and Extreme Pro V2 portable drivers, has led to plenty of disgruntled SanDisk owners voicing their complaints on social media.

One Redditor noted how his 4TB drive erased all the data he had uploaded onto it, an event which has been repeated for countless others over the last couple of months.

Western Digital broke its months-long silence on the drive issues on Friday when it told ArsTechnica it had a software update finished and ready for 4TB Extreme and Extreme Pro owners. In a statement to ArsTechnica, the SanDisk maker said: “Western Digital is aware of reports indicating some customers have experienced an issue with 4TB SanDisk Extreme and/or Extreme Pro portable SSDs (SDSSDE61-4T00 and SDSSDE81-4T00 respectively).”

The company added: “We have resolved the issue and will publish a firmware update to our website soon. Customers with questions or who are experiencing issues should contact our Customer Support team for assistance.”

As Engadget notes, Western Digital did not reveal when the update would arrive or if the company was planning on a fix for 2TB models. Western Digital did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment on whether it would refund affected customers who lost their data because of the issue.

Problems haven’t been reported in SanDisk’s bought before the end of 2022, so it’s unlikely owners of those drives will be affected by the news.

Meanwhile, HP is working to fix a buggy firmware update that's been bricking its Office Jet printers since its release earlier this month.

HP customers say their printers are displaying blue screens with "83C0000B" errors on the built-in touch screens.
