Vimeo's AI Generates Video Scripts in Seconds, Removes Your 'Ums'

Vimeo is embracing AI to reduce video production to mere minutes—you don't even need to write a script anymore.

A collection of new tools Vimeo refers to as its "AI-powered video creation suite" allows a script to be generated from a text prompt, which is then displayed using a built-in teleprompter. The human involved in this process simply needs to read off the teleprompter and not worry about making mistakes.

Once the recording is complete, the AI goes to work again editing the video in order to remove any long pauses or filler words, such as those "ums" and "uhs" many of us naturally utter. Want to see it in action? Vimeo setup a test video so you can try out the new system for yourself.

The script generation takes seconds, the teleprompter offers adjustable font size and pace to allowing for a natural reading, and the text-based video editor only requires a single click to clean up the finished video. The whole process should only take a few minutes.

“AI in video opens up a new frontier of accessibility. Any individual or business now has the ability to produce engaging, professional content with no prior production experience, and within mere minutes,” said Ashraf Alkarmi, chief product officer at Vimeo. “We’re clearly only scratching the surface of what AI can accomplish for organizations and the people within them. We envision a future in which AI knowledge is a prerequisite, not a luxury, to video production."

Vimeo users will be able to take advantage of the AI-powered video creation suite from July. Anyone with a Standard plan subscription will be able to trial the new features for free, which suggests using AI will require paying extra once the suite of tools comes out of beta.

This is another example of AI giving us a productivity boost, but it's unlikely to put any professional video editors out of a job. Even if it does eventually get good enough to render video editors useless, AI is already creating new jobs.
