At 3:46 am this morning Tesla tweeted a photo of its first cyber truck built at Giga Texas, the company's manufacturing facility near Austin, suggesting that we might not have much longer to wait before people who preordered the truck back in 2019 can finally get behind the wheel.
During Tesla’s fourth-quarter earnings call in January, Elon Musk said that mass production of the Cybertruck won’t start until 2024; however, the first of the trucks were expected to roll off the company’s production line this summer, so it would appear we’re right on schedule. Or at least we’re right on schedule for the most recent timeline provided by the company.
Teslas Cybertruck was originally announced back in 2019 with a production timeline that would have had the truck shipping in 2021. The trucks’ release date has moved since then to 2022 and then 2023, the price has also changed.
While Musk originally said the base price of the Cybertruck would be $39,900, he announced in August of last year that the pricing would be higher; however, he didn’t provide a specific amount that the cost would increase.
"It was unveiled in 2019 ... a lot has changed since then, so the specs and the pricing will be different. I hate to give a little bit of bad news, but I think there's no way to have anticipated quite the inflation we have seen and various issues,” he said at the time.
Musk has also said that those who paid the $99 to reserve a truck back in 2019 would be expected to pay the new, higher price for the vehicle.
When the truck was revealed the base price was $39,900 for a single-motor model, while the dual-motor model would start at $49,900 and the tri-motor model $69,900. Users could choose whether or not to add the self-driving option, which would increase the cost of the vehicle by $7000.
Even though we’re still not quite sure how much the truck will cost when it does become available, today’s tweet suggests that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for customers that have been waiting for the arrival of the truck over the past several years.
