Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has already smashed a box office record

Cinemas have become mini stadiums over the weekend, with the release of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film. Fans have been dancing in their seats (and out of them), phone torches aloft, singing their hearts out.

Turns out a Swiftload of people want to relive the tour or see it for the first time (the tickets were famously hard to get and pretty expensive): Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour has broken the box office record for the highest domestic ticket sales for a concert film in history, beating Justin Bieber's Never Say Never film run in 2011.

After setting an October opening night record with $39 million in ticket sales, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour has debuted at the top of the North American box office, earning a whopping $95–97 million, according to chain AMC Theatres. (In comparison, the previous record holder, Bieber's concert film, made $73 million for the entire run in cinemas, Variety reports.) The Eras tour film, which was announced only in August, reportedly sold over $100 million in advance tickets globally.

At the film's premiere at The Grove in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Swift herself channelled Swiftie energy, dancing and singing along to her own songs. In an iconic moment for the pop culture-loving ages, she was joined by fellow 2023 tour monarch Beyoncé — whose own Renaissance tour concert film is out in December.

Ticket prices for the Eras film for adults are set at $19.89, a reference to Swift's album and birth year, which is higher than the average cinema ticket price in the U.S. (not in cities like New York or LA, we know).

The numbers come as no real surprise given the amount of money Swift is set to make for the actual Eras Tour overall — according to the Washington Post, it could make an estimated $5.7 billion by the end of the tour next year. The release of the film simply further amplifies the cultural cornerstone Swift's Eras tour has become for 2023, with the superstar set to continue with global dates from November.
