ICYMI: Apple's Scary Fast announcement included a trio of new processors for Macs: the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max. Just like the M2 over the M1, this new chipset promises increased performance over previous iterations; unlike the comparative performance of those two chips, the M3 offers a substantial uptick in performance with up to 35% more speed over the M1 chip.

Other noteworthy features include added engine support for AV1 decoding, which would normally require a dedicated graphics card and therefore wasn’t previously supported on Macs. Then there's an increased memory capacity from a maximum of 96GB in the M2 Max to 128GB. The M3 will also have a greater capacity for gaming over previous iterations, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, and a dynamic system that tailors memory utilization to boost GPU performance. The M3 model does all of this while drawing less power from the system, which in turn means longer battery life. Apple claims that the new MacBook Pro M3 will have a 22-hour-long battery life, but until our experts have gotten their hands on the device for thorough review, we’ll hope for the best.

The base MacBook isn’t just an improvement over the last iteration, it’s also $400 cheaper. That’s 400 reasons why you should consider upgrading your old MacBook M1 if you've been considering it.
