Crochet craze: How to weave the Seventies look into your summer wardrobe
The surprise hit of high summer, colourful crochet is everywhere right now. What started on the spring/summer 2023 catwalks as more of a laidback, seaside-inspired look – with cream, custard and khaki beach dresses at Gabriela Hearst, Khaite and Ulla Johnson – has bloomed into a rainbow-bright riot on the high street. The fabric – which is created by using a hook to weave loops of yarn – has fallen in and out of fashion throughout the decades. The hippy heyday of the Seventies saw a massive boom in crochet clothing, in particular garments made from a patchwork of ‘granny squares’. More recently, London Fashion Week designer Christopher Kane (known for his love of ‘granny chic’) put black and blue crochet on the catwalk, styled with leather and latex. Singer Harry Styles – known for his love of Seventies styles – has inspired fans to weave their own crochet cardigans after he was spotted on stage in a patchwork design. According to Klarna Shopping Index research, shoppers are embracing the retro look in a big way, with sales of crochet items up 81% year on year. The most popular garments are trousers (up 269%), shirts (193%) and skirts (140%). So how should you wear the trend now? This year’s revival is all about fun in the sun. A mesh dress or cover-up is a beachwear must-have if you’re jetting off somewhere hot on holiday. For a subtle Seventies look, team a bright crochet vest with wide-leg or flared jeans or denim cut-offs. Heading to a festival? Go bold with a ‘granny square’ dress in a cocktail of colours or co-ord set in this season’s hottest hue: emerald green. Accessorise your look with some vintage-style cork sole wedges or espadrilles (another classic trend that’s making a comeback right now) and add a woven beach bag for a cute finishing touch. Heidi Klum hints at her ‘really extra’ 2023 Halloween costume: ‘It’s going to be good’
Heidi Klum is prepping for the debut of her own creation – her 2023 Halloween costume. From a flesh-eating alien to Fiona and a sparkly firework, the 50-year-old supermodel not only stunts on high-fashion runways but on the red carpet for the spookiest night of the year. It’s safe to say Klum’s love for dressing up isn’t just haute couture. She’s a costume enthusiast as well, and the mother of three is already preparing to assume her character for this year’s Halloween celebration. The America’s Got Talent judge spoke to the MailOnline last week while taping for the show, where Klum hinted at her outlandish costume plans currently in the works. “It’s going to be extra. It’s going to be really extra. I have had sleepless nights over it, you know me,” she confessed. “I have to admit, I love it. And then my gut, I feel like it’s going to be good.” Last year, the German businesswoman shocked spectators by dressing in an all-too-realistic worm get-up, which took two years to make. Only the fashion mogul’s eyes peered through the thick and slimy coating of the cylinder costume. Speaking to the MailOnline, Klum admitted her team conveyed the same concerns over her desired look for this year as they did with her 2022 worm attire. “They were like, ‘A worm, really?’” Klum recalled in conversation with the outlet. “They kind of wanted me to think of a plan B and a plan C, but I’m not like that. For me, it is plan A.” “If you are thinking of all different other things, then it’s not going to be a success or it’s not going to be that major,” she continued. “Everyone around is always like: ‘Think of something different. This is crazy. And the worm is crazy.’” Though Klum’s been known to incorporate her husband and children in the storyline for her 31 October looks, she revealed her 2023 appearance will be a solo act. She admitted: “I never know if it will be good until the day, and I don’t want to let my Halloween fans down. There are so many creative people around the world and I don’t want to let them down.” The TV host has known her costume would only involve herself since 1 November last year, as that’s when she typically starts planning for the following year’s holiday. “When I wake up tomorrow, I start thinking of the next [costume],” Klum told People at her 2022 party. Klum’s bubbly textured invertebrate costume followed her intricate Zombie look and 2020 toilet paper mummy. The producer gravitates toward heavy makeup and facial reconfiguration for accuracy in every character. She’s rarely recognisable on the day, except for her eyes piercing through the thick mask made to look animated for every character. However, the style enthusiast took a break to seemingly celebrate herself in 2016, when she dressed as a Victoria’s Secret angel. Not only did Klum wear a renowned runway look from the intimates brand, but she convinced a squad of other women to mimic her look and reconstruct their facial features to look like her. In 2013, Klum decided to hit the fast-forward function on time and dressed like an old lady. The immaculate prosthetics, which included a wrinkled collarbone and varicose veins lining her neck, crafted a look so realistic that you’d think she was many years past her age - and not the then 40 years old that she was. Pete Davidson leaves sweary voicemail to Peta after they criticised him for buying a dog
Pete Davidson had some choice words for PETA, telling the animal rights organisation to "suck my d***" when he was called out by them for buying a dog instead of adopting one. This unpredictable beef began when the former SNL comedian and his girlfriend, Chase Sui Wonders were spotted buying cavapoo puppy in New York recently. It came after the death of the Davidson's two-year-old dog Henry last month who had "unfortunately got very sick very fast," and Davidson described in a message how he, along with his mum and sister, "are broken and will miss him forever." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter But since being spotted purchasing a new pup, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have criticised Davidson's choice not to adopt. "It's tragic that Pete didn’t seek out a borough-born mutt from a city animal shelter, because a scrappy New Yorker with charm, personality, and unconventional handsomeness could have been his perfect match," said Daphna Nachminovitch, the Senior VP of Cruelty Investigations at PETA to TMZ on June 5. “Since shelters in New York and across the country are overflowing with homeless animals, PETA urges Pete to show some big heart energy by adopting, not shopping, in the future.” Given the public denouncement, the message appeared to reach Davidson who decided to leave an explicit voicemail to Nachminovitch, that was obtained by TMZ. "Hi, my name is Pete Davidson. This message is for Daphna. Thank you so much for making comments publicly that I didn’t adopt a dog. I just want to let you know I’m severely allergic to dogs so I have to get a specific breed," he explained. "I’m only not allergic to cavapoos and those type of dogs, and my mom’s f****** dog who’s 2 years old died a week prior and we’re all so sad so I had to get a specific dog. "So why don’t you do your research before you f****** create news stories for people because you’re a boring tired f***? F*** you and suck my d***!" Since then PETA has hit back at the Bupkis actor and said in a statement to TMZ: "If Pete had done his research, he would know that there’s no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, that at least a quarter of dogs in shelters are purebreds, and that Petfinder has listings for homeless dogs of every breed under the sun, including the one he purchased." Then Davidson himself provided a statement to TMZ where he admitted he used a "poor choice of words" in the voicemail but added: "I am not sorry for standing up for myself and my family." "I haven't seen my mom and sister cry like that in over 20 years. I was trying to cheer up my family. I was already upset that the store had filmed me without my permission or acknowledgment." "Then this organization (PETA) made a public example of us, making our grieving situation worse." Elsewhere, Peta have been mocked as the animal rights organisation uses dinosaurs to make bizarre argument. Have your say in our news democracy.
