Helmut Marko has received a written warning from the FIA and was “reminded of his responsibilities as a public figure in motorsport” after his ”offensive remark” about Sergio Perez. The 80-year-old, who works as a special advisor for Red Bull, apologised after comments made after the Italian Grand Prix two weeks ago. Marko referred to Perez’s background when discussing his poor form, saying: “Let’s remember that he (Perez) is South American and so he is not as focused as Max Verstappen or Sebastian Vettel was.” While Marko apologised for the “offensive remark”, with Perez accepting the apology, Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff were among the figures to condemn Marko’s actions when speaking this weekend in Singapore. Now, the FIA have confirmed that Marko has "received a written warning and been reminded of his responsibilities as a public figure in motorsport in line with the FIA Code of Ethics." Hamilton, 38, labelled Marko’s comments as “completely unacceptable” on Thursday. “This is not something you just apologise for and it is all OK,” the seven-time world champion said. “Whilst we say there is no room for any type of discrimination in this sport – and there should be no room for it – to have leaders and people in his position making comments like this is not good for us moving forward. “There are a lot of people in the background that really are combating these kind of things, but it is hard to manoeuvre if people at the top have mindsets which stop us from progressing. “But it is not my team and not how we move as a team. We still have a lot of work to do to make this a more inclusive environment.” Mercedes boss Wolff added: “That thing is so embarrassing for Formula 1., overall. “It’s not even saying it, it’s to have the mindset. To come up with these things. We are trying to do so much on diversity and equality, not only because we need to it’s because it needs it. “This is a role model environment, we are a global sport, we are going to every country, we are embracing the cultural differences. That hasn’t got any place in Formula 1. Karun Chandok believes Williams should target Liam Lawson for a 2024 seat after the rookie’s impressive performance in Singapore. Lawson, who has replaced the injured Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri in the last three races and will also fill in this weekend in Japan, secured his first points-finish at the weekend by coming home ninth. It secured the New Zealander two points and AlphaTauri’s best-finish of the season but Ricciardo is likely to return in three weeks’ time in Qatar. However, the perceived underachievement of Logan Sargeant at Williams this season – he is still on zero points, while team-mate Alex Albon has earned 21 points – has led Chandok to believe that Williams boss James Vowles should approach Lawson about a full-time seat next year. “If I was Williams, I would definitely be looking at Liam Lawson,” ex-F1 driver Chandok told Sky F1. “You’ve got to have the conversation, haven’t you? Because you know, Albon’s out-qualified Sargeant on every occasion, he has had scored all the points so far at Williams. “If you are Williams, you should be shopping around and Liam Lawson had put himself on the market in a very good way.” While most teams have confirmed their driver line-ups for 2024, only Williams with Sargeant and AlphaTauri with both seats are yet to do so. It has been widely reported that AlphaTauri will this week, at a minimum, confirm Yuki Tsunoda’s seat for 2024 in what would be his fourth-straight season with Red Bull’s sister team. Lawson, who has been racing in the Japanese Super Formula series this season after finishing third in Formula 2 last year, insisted post-race in Singapore that he wasn’t thinking too much about his future. “I have no idea, honestly,” the 21-year-old said, when asked about his future. “It’s tricky to get a full-time seat in this sport. But like I said, rather than looking at all those external things, it’s for me just focusing on every session, trying to maximise each time I’m in the car and try what I can.” Deputising mid-season and impressing does not always lead to a bright future in F1: Nyck de Vries finished ninth last year in Monza for Williams, filling in for Alex Albon, and subsequently secured a 2023 drive with AlphaTauri. Audi have revealed former Le Mans winner Neel Jani has joined the team as a simulator driver ahead of their 2026 Formula 1 entry. The German brand, owned by Volkswagen, announced last summer they would enter F1 under new regulations in 2026, building their own power unit in Bavaria. By October, a deal had been struck to take over the Sauber works team, currently branded as Alfa Romeo, in time for 2026. With preparations for their entry well underway, with Andreas Seidl leaving McLaren in December to join as the team’s new CEO, Swiss driver Jani has been announced as a driver to aid development on the power-unit with simulator work. Jani, 39, is a former F1 test and reserve driver for Red Bull and has driven in GP2, Formula E and Le Mans, which he won in 2016 with Porsche. “I am delighted to accompany Audi on their way into Formula 1,” said Jani. “It is both an honour and a great responsibility to be involved in a project of this magnitude at an early stage. “I am sure that with my experience from Formula 1 and LMP [Le Mans Prototype] projects I can forge good links between theory and practice.” Audi are aiming to test their first full power unit by the end of this year. “Just like in production development, simulation plays a major role in our Formula 1 project,” said Oliver Hoffmann, member of the board of management for technical development of Audi AG. “Our simulator is an important tool for the power unit development. It requires a development driver who in addition to a grasp of technology brings versatile experience to the project, especially in terms of energy management in racing conditions.” Audi are a confirmed entry for 2026 while the FIA are currently in the midst of a process of considering other prospective entries from the likes of Andretti-Cadillac, Hitcech GP and Panthera Team Asia.
