Britain’s largest budget airline will send “rescue flights” for passengers stranded abroad by air traffic control chaos. As hundreds of flights were cancelled on Tuesday, easyJet confirmed it would operate five repatriation flights to London Gatwick over the coming days. The rescue flights will operate from Palma and Faro on 30 August, Tenerife and Enfidha on 31 August and Rhodes on 1 September. More than 1,200 flights to, from and within the UK were grounded by the failure at the national air traffic provider Nats, with around 200,000 people sleeping at airports overnight. Earlier on Tuesday, easyJet grounded more than 80 flights, including three dozen at Gatwick, including those serving popular tourist destinations such as Athens and Venice. Confirming the rescue flights, an easyJet spokesperson said: “We have been providing customers with assistance and hotel accommodation and advising anyone who has needed to make their own hotel or alternative travel arrangements that they will be reimbursed. “During this traditionally very busy week for travel, options for returning to the UK are more limited on some routes and so easyJet will be operating five repatriation flights to London Gatwick over the coming days from Palma and Faro on August 30, and Tenerife and Enfidha on Thursday August 31 and from Rhodes on Friday September 1. “We are also operating larger aircraft on key routes including Faro, Ibiza, Dalaman and Tenerife to provide some additional 700 seats this week. “Although this situation was outside of our control, we are sorry for the difficulty this has caused for our customers and remain focused on doing all possible to assist and repatriate them. Customers will be moved onto repatriation flights and notified directly.” Meanwhile, National Air Traffic Services (Nats) confirmed that the air traffic control failure was caused by flight data received by the organisation, prompting both its primary and backup systems to suspend automatic processing. His statement appeared to confirm earlier reports from sources who told The Independent that a dodgy flight plan filed by a French airline may have sparked the major systems meltdown. “Very occasionally technical issues occur that are complex and take longer to resolve. In the event of such an issue our systems are designed to isolate the problem and prioritise continued safe air traffic control”, the statement from Nats CEO Martin Rolfe read. “This is what happened yesterday. At no point was UK airspace closed but the number of flights was significantly reduced. Initial investigations into the problem show it relates to some of the flight data we received. “Our systems, both primary and the back-ups, responded by suspending automatic processing to ensure that no incorrect safety-related information could be presented to an air traffic controller or impact the rest of the air traffic system. A new documentary is set to offer insight into the life of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher. The German has not been seen in public since suffering a brain injury in a skiing accident in December 2013. The seven-time F1 world champion left hospital in 2014 and his family have maintained strict privacy over his injury and condition. A new five-part documentary by German broadcaster ARD is set to air to mark ten years since his incident in the French Alps. The final details of the documentary are yet to be revealed, but it is due to be released on 28 December. Schumacher won 91 races during his F1 career and five successive Drivers Championship crowns between 2000 and 2004. A Netflix documentary, “Schumacher”, aired in 2021 and featured an update from his wife, Corinna, who said that her husband was “different, but here”. “Unfortunately, life isn’t fair sometimes,” the seven-time world champion’s younger brother Ralf Schumacher told German magazine Bunte recently. “We have to accept it. When I see his children Gina-Maria and Mick, my heart smiles. If anyone in the family seeks my advice, I am there. They go their own way.” The Schumacher siblings remain the only pair of brothers to each win a Formula 1 race, with Ralf winning six times across a decade in the sport. “In the Schumacher family we have always stuck together,” Ralf explained of his relationship with his older brother while the pair were both racers. “There was no envy. Mick Schumacher has been confirmed as a driver for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship next year. The 24-year-old has been present in the Formula 1 paddock this season as a reserve driver for Mercedes, driving in the simulator and providing cover for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. The German driver, son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, was dropped from his F1 race seat at Haas at the end of the 2022 season after two years but after experiencing a year without racing in 2023, Schumacher will race for Alpine in their Hypercar squad next season. “A new chapter is beginning for me with Alpine in the FIA WEC hypercar category,” Schumacher said. “The car is impressive, and I can’t wait to get started. “I’ve grown up with single-seaters, so driving a car with a closed cockpit and covered wheels is a great opportunity to hone my driving skills.” Schumacher recently completed a test for Alpine in their A424 hypercar as he takes his first racing steps outside single-seater cars. It is thought that any endurance racing would be in tandem with his role as a Mercedes reserve again next year, though Silver Arrows boss Toto Wolff is yet to formally confirm that Schumacher will be staying with the team. Schumacher added: “I sorely missed racing this year; it’s what I’ve loved to do since I was a kid, and it was sometimes difficult to watch the other drivers take to the track. “Endurance racing is a new challenge for me, and I’m sure we will share great moments together next year with Alpine.” Schumacher has been linked with the only F1 seat unconfirmed for next year - Logan Sargeant’s spot at Williams. However, it is likely that the American will be given another year at the wheel by Williams, particularly after his strongest qualifying performance of the season to date in Las Vegas at the weekend. Bruno Famin, vice-president of Alpine Motorsports, added of Schumacher’s addition: “With [team principal] Philippe Sinault, we wanted drivers who are not only fast and reliable but also showing a real team spirit and good racing acumen to best represent the Alpine colours in the premier category of the World Endurance Championship. “It might be [Schumacher’s] first foray into endurance, but his enthusiasm for the project and his will to join us are palpable. I’m sure he will be a real asset.” Schumacher will be present in the F1 paddock this weekend at the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
