Weight loss surgery can help lower the risk of developing cancer, a study has claimed. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Utah, also found that cancer mortality rates were significantly lower among female surgical patients compared to those who did not receive any bariatric surgery. Although population studies have previously established a positive association between body mass index and cancer rates, it has remained unclear whether the reduction in body weight leads to reduced cancer risk. Researchers say this is due to significant and sustained weight loss in large populations which may be difficult to achieve. However, because of the substantial and maintained weight loss following bariatric surgery, recent studies have reported reduced cancer rates and lower cancer mortality compared with those who haven’t had the proceedure, according to the study’s authors. “As scientists study human diseases, an element of discovery is to confirm like results from multiple studies,” said study author Ted Adams. “This research represents another important study that strongly supports the long-term benefits of weight loss surgery in the prevention of cancer.” Researchers compared cancer prevalence and death rates arranged according to obesity and non-obesity-related cancers, looking at sex, stage of the disease and procedure. The study looked at 22,000 bariatric surgery patients compared with non-surgical subjects with severe obesity between 1982 to 2019. Each patient was matched up based on age, sex, and body mass index. Scientists found that the bariatric surgery group had a 25 per cent lower risk of developing any cancers compared to the non-surgery group. Female patients had a 41 per cent lower risk for developing obesity-related cancers compared to those who did not have surgery done. Cancer risk for male bariatric surgery patients was not lower compared to non-surgery male subjects. Overall, a significant reduction in cancer risk was shown for cancers such as uterine, ovarian, colon, pre-menopausal breast and post-menopausal breast. The study also revealed death from cancer was lower by 47 per cent among female bariatric surgery patients in comparison to matched non-surgery female patients. “Important findings of this study are that bariatric surgery results in lower incidence rates of colon cancer (prior studies have not been consistent),” Dr Adam said. “Also, both pre and post-menopausal women experience reduced breast cancer incidence following bariatric surgery, which may suggest weight loss among women in either category with severe obesity may benefit from reduced breast cancer.” The study is available online in the journal Obesity. FP1 had only been going for eight minutes under the lights before Carlos Sainz’s car stopped on the long Vegas strip. Replays show his Ferrari car went over a loose drain cover before the Spaniard veered to the side and stopped the car. A red flag was thrown and, shortly after, the stewards announced the session would not resume and are now in a race against time to fix the issue on the surface before second practice starts at midnight, local time (8am GMT). The message from race control said: “Session will not be resumed due to track repairs.” Alpine later announced that Esteban Ocon’s chassis would be changed due to damage from the drain cover. It is a shambolic start to the race weekend for Formula 1, who are the sole promoters of the inaugural race on the streets of Sin City. Charles Leclerc insisted he had “nowhere to go” after being booed by Mexican fans at the end of Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix. Leclerc, who finished third, was jeered by Mexican fans in the stadium section after the race won by Max Verstappen. The Ferrari man, who started on pole, was sandwiched in-between the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez at the start heading down into turn one. But while Verstappen was far enough ahead to take first place, Perez on the outside turned in too early and clipped the front of Leclerc’s car. It left Perez spinning off the track and subsequent damage to the floor and sidepod of his Red Bull meant he despairingly had to retire from his home race. “A lot of booing!” said a surprised Leclerc, after his tough reception. “Guys, honestly I had nowhere to go! Unfortunately, I touched Checo, I had nowhere to go. “It ended the race of Checo. It’s life, I’m disappointed to end the race of Checo, I honestly had nowhere to go!” Perez, to his credit in the media pen afterwards, did not blame the Monegasque driver for the incident. “I had a tremendous start, the gap was there,” said Perez. “I had the chance to take the lead, I went for it - I wasn’t expecting Charles to be in the middle and to brake that late. The formula for the perfect fish finger sandwich has been revealed: it's made with four fish fingers, 'real' butter, two slices of white bread, ketchup... and cut sideways.  A poll of 2,000 adults who eat fish finger sandwiches found that 42 per cent said it was their sandwich of choice.  According to those polled, the optimum fish finger sarnie is also made with lettuce (21 per cent), cheese (15 per cent) and tomato (12 per cent).  Nearly half (43 per cent) like their sandwich to be cut sideways, so there are whole fish fingers on both sides of the bread. But 30 per cent like to cut their sarnie lengthways, so all fish fingers are in half, and nine per cent go as far as cutting everything into triangles. Commissioned by Birds Eye, The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and Iceland Foods, which sells MSC certified products like Birds Eye fish fingers, the study found 76 per cent would opt for a fish finger sandwich made from sustainably sourced cod.  A spokesperson for the supermarket chain said: "We know our fish fingers are not only great value, but they taste good too - making them a quick and easy meal that is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser for families. "With one third of the world's fish stocks overfished, it is more important than ever for shoppers to choose seafood from sustainable sources." Exactly nine in 10 said the fish finger sandwich is a quick, easy and affordable meal that tastes good. In addition, just over two thirds (68 per cent) said they care about making mealtimes more sustainable. But 62 per cent claim they only have a vague idea of what sustainable fishing is. Encouragingly, 80 per cent correctly believe the process of sustainable fishing ensures fish are left in the ocean, impact on habitats and ecosystems is minimalised, and fisheries are effectively managed. However, one in 16 mistakenly think sustainable fishing happens once a year so there is enough fish left in the ocean for everyone else. When asked to describe the meaning of the blue MSC label, 42 per cent were “unsure”. However, 44 per cent rightly said it is the symbol of sustainability for wild-caught fish and seafood. More than half (55 per cent) said they care about the impact their food choices have on the planet but find it confusing, while 39 per cent of those who took part in the OnePoll.com study simply can’t afford to make the necessary changes.
