An 18-year-old was told her constant exhaustion was likely caused by depression and the stress of her A-levels – only to eventually be diagnosed with a debilitating chronic illness. Elizabeth Hope, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, experienced painful headaches and had begun falling asleep at 5pm every day while studying for her A-levels. “My mum would wake me for dinner and then I’d maybe do like an hour’s homework, which is absolutely not enough when you’re studying for your A-levels, and then fall asleep again,” the now-27-year-old recalls. When Hope said she needed to lie down during rehearsals for the school show and stopped going to cheerleading practice because she was too tired, her parents knew there was a serious problem. “To start off with, my parents thought ‘oh she just doesn’t want to go to school’,” she says. “But I started not being able to do the things that I enjoyed, so then we realised that something was very wrong.” She visited another doctor, who found Hope was experiencing myalgic encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome or ME, a long-term illness that affects the nervous and immune systems. People with ME can experience severe pain and fatigue, as well as a range of other symptoms, making everyday physical and mental tasks exhausting, according to the NHS. Hope was so exhausted that she struggled to leave the house without using a wheelchair. “I was literally stuck in my house,” she says. “We would maybe go out to one shop and then I would have to come home. Being able to use a wheelchair was amazing for me because I could go to two or three shops or go to the park and stuff like that.” A woman of 18 told by doctors that her constant exhaustion was likely depression and A-level exam stress, was diagnosed with a debilitating chronic illness which means she uses a wheelchair, but has overcome her adversity to become an award-winning wheelchair dancer and dancing instructor. “Struggling with loneliness,” she was “really unsure” when her mother suggested she attend a wheelchair dance class in Birmingham – but it turned out to be one of the best decisions she ever made. She learnt to manage her energy levels and “fell in love with dance”, and has since gone on to perform in her wheelchair at the 2022 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony and two cheerleading world championships. “I think for people with disabilities, it’s not like you can do whatever you want, because it’s not true, but you can do things in a different way,” she says. “But I love dancing and being able to share my passion with other people is just, yes, it’s really cool”. As a dancer, Hope was soon competing and joined another two dance groups, Sun Rae Inclusive Dance and Apt Dance Theatre. She went on to win the UK ParaDance National Championships with the group and came second in the solo contest after performing to Kylie Minogue’s 2018 song “Dancing”. She also found a cheerleading group and travelled to Florida in the US, where she went on to win the world championships in 2019, in the adaptive abilities category. In early 2022, Hope received a message from a friend suggesting that she apply for an assistant dance artist job with the national disability charity Sense. “They said you can apply with a cover letter and CV or via video,” she said. “So I basically made this video about how much I love dance.” To her surprise she was invited to attend a recruitment workshop. “I was like, that was fun, but I won’t get a job because all these people are way more qualified than me,” she said. “But then I got offered the job.” Hope was initially going to turn down the job because the working hours were more than she thought she could manage, but was told they would come up with a solution. She now teaches people with disabilities to dance, from non-verbal school groups to elderly people in care homes – including a 102-year-old. “It’s just about managing my energy and pain,” she says. “So for example, I rest a lot and only work one day a week. TikTok is overflowing with beauty crazes that spread like wildfire, from celebrity-inspired make-up to time-saving hair hacks. Sometimes these trends aren’t exactly practical (applying contour with the end of a plastic straw, for example) or appealing (fake eye bags, anyone?) but this summer there have been some gorgeous make-up looks circulating on the video platform. Subtle, flattering and easy to achieve at home, here are four popular TikTok make-up trends that look good on everyone… 1. Strawberry girl Hailey Bieber has declared it’s ‘strawberry girl summer’, sharing several snaps showing the fresh-faced make-up look on Instagram and posting a video tutorial on TikTok. Strawberry girl make-up involves a dewy, bronzed base with flushed cheeks and lips the colour of ripe strawberries. Bieber explained how she started by prepping her skin with serum and moisturiser, then used a brush to apply cream bronzer on her cheekbones and temples, followed by a few dots of concealer blended out to create a natural-looking base. The key product you need for this look is a pinky-red toned cream blush. Dab on the apples of your cheeks and blend outwards, adding a touch to your nose (if it looks like you’ve caught the sun, you’ve nailed it). If you want to you can add fake freckles with a brown liquid eyeliner or freckle pen, then finish with a hint of mascara (not too much) and the same cream blush dabbed onto your lips for a juicy pout. To achieve a monochromatic look, apply a matte bronzer on the cheekbones and temples, then finish with a nudey-brown lip colour – a satin or gloss finish keeps the look dewy and fresh. The key to achieving this look is to use all cream products and, if you’re really committed, start the night before with tanning drops. Beauty fans on TikTok are loving self-tan serums and drops that you mix with your moisturiser and leave to develop overnight, so you wake up with a warm sunkissed glow. Ollie Bearman was barely three months old when Fernando Alonso won his first world championship in 2005 – but on his Formula One debut in Mexico City, the Essex 18-year-old finished ahead of the double world champion. “That was an added bonus,” he said with a broad smile. On Friday, Bearman made history by becoming the youngest British driver to step foot in an F1 machine at a Grand Prix weekend. And he quietly impressed, too. Competing for American outfit Haas, Bearman finished 15th in first practice, only 1.6 seconds slower than triple world champion Max Verstappen, and three tenths adrift of Nico Hulkenberg – a veteran of 200 grands prix – in the other Haas. He was also speedier than Alonso. Five rookies were fielded at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and Bearman was quickest of them all. Raised in Chelmsford, and schooled at King Edward VI Grammar, Bearman joined Ferrari’s driver academy, aged only 16. Bearman had just won both the German and Italian Formula Four championships, and his performances made those at Maranello sit up and take note. He quit school – despite initial resistance from his mother, Terri – left the family home in Chelmsford, and moved to Modena, a dozen miles north of Ferrari’s headquarters in northern Italy. Two years on, and his Italian twang is noticeable. “Maybe I got a bit lucky not to get the Essex accent,” he joked, in an interview with the PA news agency. When Lewis Hamilton made his F1 bow, Bearman was only 18 months old. Yet on Friday, he shared the same asphalt as the seven-time world champion. “When I heard Hamilton was coming up behind me on a push lap I was like ‘wow, I will get out of the way’,” he added. However, it was Hamilton’s former McLaren team-mate, the 2009 world champion Jenson Button, who was Bearman’s childhood hero. “I heard Jenson was praising me on Sky, and that was amazing for me to hear,” he adds. “I don’t know why, but he was always the guy I loved and really looked up to. It is cool that he recognised my performance in practice, and I will try to speak to him here – that is my goal.” Bearman will remain in F2 next season and he will be back in an F1 machine in practice for Haas – effectively Ferrari’s B team – next month in Abu Dhabi. “It is really cool that I have been given this opportunity,” he said. “My whole career has been a pinch-yourself moment, and this is another one. “Ferrari is such an elusive team. They are an iconic brand, they have an iconic colour and they have the best-looking car on the grid. They are putting a lot of trust in me, and loyalty is an important part of this paddock. “Of course my goal is to become a Ferrari driver, and I need to do that with my performances on track. Replicas of Rihanna’s jumpsuit during the Super Bowl just hit online stores – and sold out in less than 24 hours. Luxury fashion brand Loewe took to Instagram on 19 October to announce the launch of its red cargo jumpsuit. The product arrived months after Rhianna made headlines at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, during which she announced her second pregnancy while wearing a red jumpsuit over her matching sheer bodysuit. The company went on to describe the inspiration behind the jumpsuit and some of its features, with reference to the singer’s performance in February. “A special edition release inspired by the iconic Super Bowl look worn by Rihanna is now available online and in selected stores,” the company wrote, alongside photos of Rihana’s show and of the brand’s jumpsuit. “The cargo jumpsuit and trousers feature a range of utility details drawing upon flight gear and the halftime show’s dynamic scenography.” On Loewe’s website, the jumpsuit is available in poppy red – which imitates the colour of Rihanna’s outfit – and black. The website specified that the outfit is “crafted in medium-weight cotton canvas” and weighed about 1.2 kg. Some of the other features of the look, which is being sold for $2,900, include an “elasticated belt”, “Elasticated ankle cuffs with zip detail,” and “sipped jet pockets at the front”. The outfit is also described as a “relaxed fit” with a straight-legged pants style. As of 20 October, the poppy red jumpsuit is already sold out in all sizes. However, the black version of the cargo look is still available, but only in select sizes. Although the red jumpsuit is sold out online, it has continued to be sold in some of Loewes stores, which are in Dubai, Madrid, and other locations. Back in February of this year, Rihanna first took the stage in an iconic all-red look and high ponytail at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The Super Bowl show also marked her official return to live performances, after a five-year hiatus. During the 12-minute performance, she performed a mash-up of some of her biggest hits, including “Only Girl (In the World)”, “We Found Love”, “Work”, and “Wild Thoughts”. While speaking at a press conference before the Super Bowl, the “Disturbia” singer described how her son RZA, who she shares with partner A$AP Rocky, ultimately encouraged her to perform at the event. “When you become a mom, there’s something that just happens where you feel like you could take on the world,” she said. “You can do anything, and the Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world.
