On a street corner of downtown Toronto in the wee hours of the morning is where the best conversations are bound to happen. Over a decade later, during this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), I found myself on those same streets debating the very same topic, except this time, the film in question wasn’t a trope-ridden, objectionable, white savior narrative; it was a ripe satire consumed with tackling the very conversations that Black media professionals have been having for decades. A DUI suspect attempted to switch car seats with his dog after being pulled over by police for speeding. Springfield Police stopped and approached the vehicle for travelling 52mph in a 30mph zone on Saturday (13 May). It was then the driver allegedly got out of the passenger side and claimed he was not driving. "The driver attempted to switch places with his dog who was in the passenger seat, as the SPD officer approached and watched the entire process," a post from Springfield Police Department read. "The male party then exited the passenger side of the vehicle and claimed he was not driving." The male driver was said to show clear signs of intoxication. An officer from Springfield Police Department discovered that the man was lost in the area after driving from Las Animas to Pueblo. He was later found to have two active warrants for his arrest and was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving while ability impaired, driving under suspension, speeding 20-24 over, and resisting arrest. "The dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning," the department joked in a Facebook post, before explaining that the dog was given to an acquaintance to be looked after while the suspect was in jail. A “fired-up” Max Verstappen sent a warning to the rest of the grid that Red Bull are back on form as he set a searing pace to top the first two practice sessions at the Japanese Grand Prix. A brand of over-the-counter hay fever tablets are quickly selling out after being hailed a “miracle cure” by social media users. Several videos from TikTok creators have gone viral in the past week after they discovered that Allevia, an antihistamine that retails for as little as £4, could relieve them of hay fever’s symptoms. The tablets, which claim to provide relief for 24 hours, were previously only available on prescription but were re-classified to general sales status by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency in December 2021. The active ingredient in the tablets is fexofenadine hydrochloride, which works by blocking the effects of histamine in the body, subsequently reducing symptoms such as itching and sneezing. One TikTok user who was previously struggling with hay fever said all of her symptoms were “completely gone” after taking the tablet. Another shared an in-depth review on the effects of the tablets after a full day. After five hours of taking the medication, she said she hadn’t sneezed once. “This actually works. I’m impressed. My eyes are not bulging because they are itching. I feel good, I can enjoy the sun,” she said. Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes must start focusing on next season with Red Bull maintaining their march to F1 title glory this year. Max Verstappen secured victory at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday for Red Bull’s 10th-straight win – and nine from nine in 2023 – while the team also celebrated 100 wins in Formula 1. Christian Horner’s team now lead the constructors’ championship by 154 points to Mercedes, while Verstappen has a 69-point lead in the driver standings to team-mate Sergio Perez. Hamilton, who finished third in Montreal, was satisfied to be fighting with Verstappen and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso at the top of the leaderboard but insists his team must now divert focus to 2024. "I reckon Max’s team are already working on next year’s car, so we need to take our eye a little bit off the ball and focus on next year also but happy to be up there,” he said. "For us to be up there, having battles with Fernando in the Aston, and being on the second row, it’s been great. To be on the podium two races in a row is really fantastic for us. "We were also running fourth in Monaco, so we’re definitely getting closer. And it’s going to be a battle of development over the rest of the season. "It’s likely that they [Red Bull] will win every race, moving forwards, this year, unless the Astons and us put a lot more performance on the cars, or their car doesn’t finish,” the Brit added.
