Chef Michel Roux Jr has announced that he will be closing Le Gavroche, his two Michelin-starred restaurant, after 56 years. The former Masterchef: The Professionals judge said the decision had been made so he could spend “more time with his family”. Le Gavroche, located in Mayfair, central London, was opened in 1967 by French restaurateur brothers Albert and Michel Roux Sr. At the time it was the only French restaurant of its kind in London, offering classical French food and the highest standards of cooking and service. Roux Jr, son of Albert Roux, has run the restaurant since 1991, earning two Michelin stars – one of the most prestigious accolades in the restaurant business. Other celebrity chefs including Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White have “earned their stripes” at Le Gavroche, according to the restaurant’s website. In a lengthy Instagram post announcing the closure on Friday (18 August), Roux Jr announced the restaurant would be closing in January 2024. The chef, 63, said he had “very mixed emotions” about the decision to close, but that the restaurant’s name would “live on”. “This decision has not been made lightly,” Roux Jr wrote. “Le Gavroche means so much, not just to myself and the Roux family, but to the wider Gavroche team and you, our guests, who have become our family over so many years. “I have always felt that should Le Gavroche ever close, it must be on a high. Le Gavroche continues to be fully booked, week in, week out, but I have known for a while that I must make time for a better work/life balance, so I can spend more time with my family and on my other business ventures.” Roux Jr added that a series of “celebratory dinners”, starting in November, would be held until the restaurant’s closure. “This is not the end of Le Gavroche – the restaurant may be closing, but the name will live on,” he said. “I could not be more grateful for the restaurant team, who have loved the restaurant as if it were their own. “The entire team both past and present, will forever have my gratitude, and will always be considered as part of the Roux family.” He added: “And to you, our guests. Our success is all down to you. I would like to extend a personal thank you to every single person that has dined with us. Alex Albon would be the “dream candidate” to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull, says Nico Rosberg. Perez, who has a contract at the constructors’ champions until the end of next season, has struggled in recent months and has not claimed a win since May despite being in the best car on the grid. While Red Bull have publicly insisted the Mexican will retain his drive for 2024, other drivers are being linked with the seat to partner Max Verstappen, including the likes of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. Yet 2016 F1 world champion Rosberg believes Williams driver Albon – who drove for Red Bull for 18 months before being dropped for Perez ahead of the 2021 season – would be ideal for Christian Horner’s team moving forward. “Albon would also be a dream candidate actually for the Red Bull mother team for next year to replace Sergio Perez,” Roseberg told Sky Sports F1. “But unfortunately, as Helmut Marko was saying, Albon is locked in with a long-term contract there at Williams.” Albon has been a standout performer for Williams this year, scoring all of the team’s 23 points, and has a long-term deal in place at the team believed to run until the end of the 2024 season at a minimum. Meanwhile Albon’s team-mate, Logan Sargeant, has not scored a point all year and has five races left this season to prove to team boss James Vowles that he deserves his seat for next year. “Logan Sargeant is another one of those drivers who’s on shaky ground and really needs to prove himself,” Rosberg added. “He’s been making too many mistakes so honestly I think it’s going to be difficult for him to retain that seat for next year, especially because Albon is doing such a phenomenal job.” Sargeant will be keen to put on a good show for the home American fans this weekend at the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which is also the fifth sprint weekend of the season. Sam Brinton, the former Department of Energy official who was accused of stealing a Tanzanian fashion designer’s dresses from her airport luggage, has been arrested as a “fugitive from justice” by Maryland police. Brinton was reportedly taken into custody in Rockville, Maryland by police on Wednesday, according to police records. The specific reason for Brinton’s arrest was not immediately available. They previously oversaw nuclear waste policy at the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy, but more recently has been battling charges related to luggage theft in both Nevada and Minnesota. Brinton was charged in October for allegedly stealing a traveler’s bags worth a total of $2,325 from the Minneapolis-St Paul Airport on 16 September. They were charged again in early December by Las Vegas prosecutors with grand larceny of an item with a value between $1,200 and $5,000.
