Apple May Limit High-End Modem to iPhone 16 Pro

Much like previous updates, Apple’s iPhone 16 is expected to be faster and more efficient when it launches next year; however, some of that speed might be reserved exclusively for the high-end versions of the handset.

Jeff Pu, an analyst from Haitong International Securities, says Apple will offer the new Snapdragon X75 5G modem in the iPhone 16 next year, but only in the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models, Forbes reports. According to Pu, the move will further differentiate the Pro models from the standard lineup of the phones, which will run the current Snapdragon X70.

Apple recently signed a deal with Qualcomm to use its modems in the iPhone through at least 2026. At that point, Cupertino is expected to offer its own modems in the iPhone, if it can work out problems that have delayed the effort thus far.

Apple already makes its own chipsets; the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to be powered by an A18 Bionic chipset, and maintain the 8GB of RAM in current models.

The Snapdragon X75 5G, meanwhile, was unveiled in February as Qualcomm's top-tier connectivity platform for high-end smartphones and other devices. It's the first modem to support 5G Advanced and other capabilities intended to improve speed and connection strength.

Pu, meanwhile, also says the iPhone 16 Pros will have a new 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera, an improvement over the existing 12-megapixel cameras on the iPhone 15, and will have 0.2-inch larger screens than the current 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch models, TechRadar reports.

Previous rumors from a different analyst also point to both iPhone 16 Pro models getting the tetraprism zoom lens currently included in the iPhone 15 Max.

Of course, with at least 11 months between us and the new phones, a lot can change before the devices are released.
