Amid Rising Campus Alcoholism, Lionrock Announces “Recovery-Ready” Theme for 2023 National Online Recovery Day

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 6, 2023--

With alcohol use on the rise on college campuses, Lionrock, the inventor of online substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery services in the United States, today announced the theme for the fourth annual National Online Recovery Day campaign: Recovery-Ready. National Online Recovery Day is observed on September 22, during National Recovery Month, to drive widespread awareness for the 42 million people impacted by SUDs and emphasize online recovery services that are available and accessible from anywhere. This year, Lionrock zeros in on college campuses, providing universities with a toolkit of resources to create recovery-ready environments for sober and sober curious students.

According to the Alcohol Rehab Guide, roughly 20 percent of college students meet the criteria for having an alcohol use disorder. As college students return to university campuses after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they are drinking more than ever. College-aged women are especially impacted. According to Dr. George F. Koob, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, women are binge drinking more than men for the first time.

This National Online Recovery Day, Lionrock is calling on supporters to spread awareness of recovery support services by hosting Recovery-Ready events on campus throughout the month of September. University leaders and student-led organizations can find resources and event guides in the National Online Recovery Day Student Health Center Toolkit, available online. The toolkit includes:

  • SUD facts and tips for Student Health Centers
  • Ideas for hosting thoughtful, sober events for National Online Recovery Day on campus
  • A self-assessment checklist to help college students reflect on their partying habits

Participants are urged to help break the stigma attached to SUDs by wearing purple, the official color for National Recovery Month, and posting about campus sober events on social media, using the hashtag #RecoveryReady.

“In this post-pandemic era, health services on college campuses are overtaxed and as a result, students in long-term recovery and those seeking support for SUDs are often left to cope on their own. Lionrock wants to help create recovery-friendly environments where sober students can connect with fellow peers abstaining from alcohol and find support,” said Ashley Loeb Blassingame, Lionrock co-founder & certified alcohol and drug counselor. “That’s why we’re on a mission to share actionable resources that universities and sober students can use to create those spaces.”

Lionrock established National Online Recovery Day in 2020 to destigmatize SUDs and break the perception that treatment is inaccessible. The awareness day is a reminder that quality substance use treatment and recovery support is available entirely online, with the highest level of privacy. 2021’s theme was all about accessibility to recovery services, recognizing that only 19 percent of the millions of people impacted by SUDs receive treatment. In 2022, Lionrock encouraged employers to create more inclusive workplaces for employees in long-term recovery. This year, Lionrock shines a light on developing recovery-ready campuses to support the 20 percent of college students dealing with alcoholism and students abstaining from alcohol.
